Staying Social with Your Aging Loved One

While Home Care Assistance is here to care for your aging loved one at all hours of the day, we encourage family members to actively participate in the care process. Socializing, interacting, and maintaining relationships with friends and family is important in helping seniors maintain a happy, healthy and stress-free life. So what are some things you can do with your aging parent, grandparent, or spouse?

  1. Go for a walk. There are plenty of fun ways to exercise with your senior loved one. Daily exercise not only promotes physical health, but mental health as well. Going outside refreshes the senses, stimulates endorphins, and gives you a chance to chat with your loved one.
  2. Try something new together. It isn’t often that seniors over 80 get to experience something new and exciting. Some ideas for new experiences include going to the theatre, visiting a new site like the beach or a national park, or pursuing a new hobby such as bird watching or scrapbooking.
  3. Be nostalgic. Bringing back cheerful memories from the past promotes happiness in the moment. Take out an old photo album and share stories and experiences. This shared nostalgia also creates a strong bond and provides invaluable companionship for seniors in San Diego.
  4. Set up a monthly get-together. For a senior, having a monthly get-together could mean more than you know. Make sure the activity is something that your elderly loved one enjoys and will look forward to. Maybe it’s discussing a book that you are both reading, going to church together, or grabbing a meal with other friends and family members.
  5. Do basic chores together. Habitual things like grocery shopping, sweeping the floor, or folding laundry are all things your loved one used to do alone. Doing these small, day-to-day things together establishes camaraderie and comfortable sense of normalcy.

At Home Care Assistance San Diego, we understand that caring for an elderly parent is not always an easy task. We are here to help provide the assistance and compassionate care needed to guide your elderly loved one toward happy and healthy social interaction.
